Centre Sanctions ₹12,000 Crore for LPG Subsidy Under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2025-26

The government has approved the continuation of targeted subsidies for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries for 2025-26, with an estimated allocation of over ₹12,000 crore.

Speaking to the media in New Delhi about the Cabinet decision chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared that over 10.33 crore households have benefited from the scheme so far. Under the plan, the government will offer a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg LPG cylinder, applicable for up to nine refills per year.

The government has also approved ₹30,000 crore in compensation for the three public sector oil marketing companies—IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL—to cover the under-recoveries they faced from selling domestic LPG. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas will handle the distribution of this amount among the companies, with payments made in twelve installments. This move reflects the government’s commitment to shielding consumers from global energy market volatility while ensuring the financial stability of these oil marketing companies.

Mr. Vaishnaw also announced that the government has approved budgetary support of ₹4,200 crore for the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education scheme. The aim of this initiative is to enhance quality, equity, and governance in technical education. Around 275 government and government-aided technical institutions are expected to be selected and supported under the scheme.

The Information and Broadcasting Minister stated that the government has approved four new components under the existing Central Sector Scheme of Special Development Packages for Assam and Tripura, with a total outlay of ₹4,250 crore. These initiatives will focus on developing infrastructure and livelihood projects, which are expected to create jobs and boost income generation in both states.

Mr. Vaishnaw further announced that the government has approved the construction of a four-lane highway from Marakkanam to Puducherry in Tamil Nadu, at a total cost of ₹2,157 crore. The project aims to ease congestion on the current route and meet the growing mobility needs of rapidly developing towns like Chennai, Puducherry, Viluppuram, and Nagapattinam.
